Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Effective: January 7, 2026

Plume Dating (“Plume,” “we,” “our,” “us”) is a location-aware dating application designed to help people reconnect after naturally crossing paths in real life. Your privacy and safety are central to how we built Plume. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

By creating an account or using Plume, you agree to this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you sign up, we collect:

  • Name

  • Phone Number (for authentication purposes only)

  • Date of birth (to verify age 18+)

  • Gender and who you’re interested in

  • Photos

  • Basic profile details you choose to provide

SMS & Phone Number Information

When you provide your phone number, we use it solely to deliver authentication and security messages, including one-time passcodes (OTP) required to access your account.

We do not sell, rent, share, or disclose mobile phone numbers or SMS consent data with third parties for their marketing or promotional purposes.

SMS messages are sent only for account verification and security-related communications.

1.2 Location Information

Plume uses your device’s location to detect approximate, real-time proximity to other users and to generate generalized heat plumes showing areas where compatible users are gathering.

Plume does NOT:

  • Show your exact location to other users

  • Share your precise GPS data

  • Display pins or dots that identify you

  • Create public trails of where you’ve been

Plume does:

  • Process your location on-device and server-side to detect when you cross paths with another user

  • Use approximate zones (not precise coordinates) for heat plumes

  • Store encounter events so you can view past encounters

1.3 Usage Information

We may collect:

  • App interactions (views, likes, reveals, hides)

  • Device and log data (IP address, device model, OS version, crash logs)

  • Cookies and similar technologies for app functionality

1.4 Communication Information

If you contact support or report an issue, we may collect those communications.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Operate and improve the Plume app

  • Detect when you naturally cross paths with compatible users

  • Allow women to decide whether to reveal their profile to someone they crossed paths with

  • Notify men when someone has chosen to reveal their profile

  • Generate non-identifying heat plumes showing general areas with compatible users

  • Provide safety, fraud prevention, and moderation

  • Comply with legal obligations

We never sell your personal information, including location data.

3. What Other Users Can See

Depending on your settings and Plume’s visibility model:

Women:

  • Stay invisible until they choose to reveal their profile.

  • May view men they have crossed paths with.

Men:

  • Are visible to women after crossing paths.

  • Only see women who reveal themselves.

Other users cannot see:

  • Your exact location

  • Your real-time movement

  • Your location history

  • Your home, workplace, school, or routine

4. Legal Bases (Where Applicable)

Where required (e.g., under GDPR), we process your data based on:

  • Your consent

  • The performance of our service

  • Our legitimate interests (e.g., safety, fraud prevention, analytics)

  • Compliance with legal obligations

5. How We Share Information

We may share information with:

  • Service providers who support app operations (hosting, analytics, content moderation, security)

  • Law enforcement when legally required (e.g., valid subpoena, court order)

All service providers are required to protect your data and use it only for the purpose we specify.

We never sell your data.

6. Location Controls

Plume requires Background Location Access to detect real-world encounters, even when the app is closed.

You can:

  • Grant or revoke location access at any time

  • Choose approximate or precise location (if your device supports it)

If you disable location access, Plume will not function correctly.

7. Data Retention

We retain:

  • Account information until your account is deleted

  • Encounter logs

  • Analytics and diagnostic logs for app stability and security

When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your data as required by law.

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to:

  • Access your data

  • Correct or update your information

10. Security

We use technical and administrative measures to protect your data.
However, no system is perfectly secure. Use Plume responsibly and report suspicious behavior.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves.
If changes are significant, we will notify users in the app or by email.
